Antico centro montano immerso in un notevole contesto paesaggistico, è da sempre luogo di transito e tappa per chi attraversa l’Appennino a questa latitudine. Quali esempi preziosi della vetustà dell’itinerario che collega l’interno con la costa adriatica vi sono i recenti ritrovamenti di tratti della strada cinquecentesca, voluta da Cosimo I de’Medici (Firenze 1519 – 1574) ai tempi dell’edificazione della fortezza della Città del Sole sulla sommità del vicino Sasso di Simone. Se può sembrare una deviazione dispendiosa di tempo ed energie dal classico percorso di pellegrinaggio francescano, questo itinerario è il modo giusto per ritrovare quelle sensazioni di solitudine e compenetrazione con la natura tanto care a Francesco, con la possibilità oggi di percorrere in sicurezza sentieri tracciati e monitorati. La Riserva naturale dell’Alpe della Luna compone un comprensorio naturalistico di assoluto rilievo anche per estensione. Nei suoi 1540 ettari si trovano invertebrati assai rari come il coleottero Rosalia Alpina, ma sono anche territorio di caccia per l’aquila reale. Territorio prevalentemente boscato si caratterizza per un particolare pregio nelle specie arboree, fra le quali l’olmo montano e il tasso, ambedue poco comuni nei boschi toscani. Da segnalare la presenza del Cirsium alpis-lunae, una specie affine ai cardi estremamente rara e localizzata nei pressi della vetta del Monte dei Frati. Questo territorio è stato, fino a non molto tempo fa, luogo di passaggio delle greggi in transumanza verso la Maremma.

An ancient mountain hub immersed in a remarkable landscape, it has always been a place of transit and a stopping point for those crossing the Apennines at this latitude. As precious examples of the antiquity of the route that connects the interior to the Adriatic coast there are the recently found sections of the sixteenth-century road commissioned by Cosimo1 de’Medici (Florence 1519-1574) during the construction of the fortress of the City of the Sun on the top of the nearby Sasso di Simone. It may seem like a wasteful deviation of time and energy from the classic Franciscan pilgrimage route but this itinerary is the right way to rediscover those sensations of solitude and symbiosis with nature so dear to St.Francis, with the possibility now of travelling along safe paths that have been mapped out and are monitored. The Alpe della Luna Nature Reserve is a naturalistic area of absolute importance also in terms of its range. There are very rare invertebrates such as the Rosalia Alpina beetle in its 1540 hectares and they are also the hunting grounds for the Golden Eagle. The predominantly wooded area is characterised by particularly precious species of trees, including the Mountain Elm and the Yew, neither of which are common in Tuscan woods. To be noted is the presence of Circium alpis-lunae, an extremely rare plant species similar to thistles and located near the summit of Monte dei Frati. Until very recently this area was the droving route for herds of animals on their way to the Maremma.
