The Living Nativity Scene in Le Ville di Monterchi, in the province of Arezzo, is one of the most evocative and famous religious reenactments in the Tuscan Valtiberina region and in central Italy. First held in 2005, this monumental event transforms an entire village into a timeless Bethlehem during the Christmas season, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The Atmosphere and the Route
The magic of the nativity scene comes to life at sunset, when the village’s electric lights are turned off and the entire hamlet is illuminated solely by torches, lanterns, and braziers, creating a mystical and warm atmosphere.
Visitors walk along a path about one kilometer long that winds through the vegetation and past the old houses of the hamlet. The journey begins with the splendor of Roman and Jewish power—such as Herod’s majestic palace, the governor’s palace, and costumed guards—and then gradually descends into the beating heart of everyday life at that time.
The event is a true collective effort that requires nearly a year of preparation and involves the entire local community:
Over 250 reenactors bring the scene to life, all of whom are local volunteers.
More than 55 different settings recreate scenes of daily life down to the smallest detail.
Along the walk, you’ll come across historic workshops where reenactors faithfully recreate the gestures of traditional crafts: there are blacksmiths, carpenters, weavers, shoemakers, engravers, shepherds, and merchants selling fabrics or legumes. The experience is made even more immersive by the scents of resin and burning wood, the sound of ancient instruments, and the hospitality of the innkeepers, who offer passersby a glass of wine and warm bread.
After passing through markets, Bedouin encampments, and the oasis of the Three Wise Men, the path leads to the main scene: the Nativity grotto. In an intimate setting, lit only by fire and warmed by the animals, the Holy Family with the Baby Jesus awaits, bringing this intense journey—both historical and spiritual—to a close.
