The Madonna del Parto Civic Museums have existed since the Madonna del Parto was moved from the cemetery chapel to the historic center of Monterchi (1992) for reasons related to the fresco’s safety and preservation: it was precisely near the site where the chapel stands today that Piero della Francesca painted the fresco when the cemetery did not yet exist—instead, there was a small country church: the Church of Momentana or Santa Maria in Silvis, situated on the slopes of Montione (Mons Iunonis, Mount of Jupiter), a site associated with fertility cults.
The history of *La Madonna del Parto* is a long and turbulent one, tied to the cultural, political, and religious context that has greatly influenced the fresco’s current condition; today it can be viewed at the Civic Museums where it is housed, following a museum itinerary designed to fully engage visitors: You can begin with an immersive video lasting about ten minutes, then move along the corridor where original fragments of the Madonna del Latte — a 14th-century fresco discovered beneath the Madonna del Parto — are on display, and conclude the first part of the visit by finally admiring the work itself, which has recently been illuminated by iGuzzini Illuminazione with its most important characteristics in mind.
