“I remember as if it were today that on 6 March 1474 a son was born to me, whom I named Michelangelo, and… he was born whilst I was podestà of Caprese, and he was born in Caprese.”

This castle, perched amongst the green hills of the Tuscan Apennines, is the birthplace of one of the greatest artists of all time, Michelangelo Buonarroti.

The Michelangelo Buonarroti Birthplace Museum is housed within the Castle of Caprese Michelangelo and comprises three main buildings: the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo Clusini and the ‘corte alta’, enclosed within the castle walls which encompass the ancient parade ground, now a garden with exhibitions.
