Anghiari and its historic centre | 50th Anniversary of the Museum
Saturday 23 May, 9.00 pm – Palazzo Taglieschi Museum
To mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Palazzo Taglieschi National Museum, a series of events exploring the history and art of the Valtiberina will begin on Saturday 23 May at 9.00 pm
The first talk will be given by Armando Babbini (former official of the Arezzo Superintendency), who will explore a theme centring on the Renaissance residence itself, with the surrounding hamlet, as the focal point of his presentation
The lecture, entitled “Anghiari and its historic centre. The evolution of the urban layout, from feudal castle to free commune”, will explore a pivotal period in urban development, the layout of which is still clearly discernible today in the road network and the medieval buildings of the walled town centre
The identification of the city gates, the clear evidence of pre-existing towers and the decorative elements — such as coats of arms, emblems, stone friezes and frescoes — allow us to see first-hand what Anghiari was like in the Middle Ages and to rediscover these artefacts amongst the works housed in the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions of the Upper Tiber Valley at Palazzo Taglieschi
